Here are real quotes from lawyers and legal marketers on Twitter:

"Just uploaded a video. Check it out."
"I favorited a YouTube video."
"Check this video out -- Lawsuit Information: Find a Lawyer, Attorney, Legal Adv."
"Need a lawyer? Check out this video."
"New video uploaded, attorney handling immigration, criminal law, contact me at..."

Do these phrases sound familiar? Do you know attorneys who market themselves and their videos using these phrases? If you do, then I will tell you that those attorneys are making some of the biggest marketing mistakes ever using social media like Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, and MySpace.

The purpose of creating attorney videos is to educate your potential client, and the publicvideo marketing platform. As an attorney, the goal of your video is not to sell anything. Rather, your goal is to get the online viewer to raise their hand to contact you for more information. Your goal is not to sell your services in your video, and most lawyers fail to recognize this important distinction.

Before you decide to blog or Tweet about your video, you need to ask yourself an important question: Who is the ideal viewer who you want to watch your video? In my case, my ideal viewer is an injured victim looking for information about cases like theirs in the State of New York. Once you recognize who your ideal viewer is, then you can fashion an announcement about your video that's appropriate solely for your viewer. If you simply shout out to the world "Come watch my video because it's here," I guarantee you nobody will ever want to watch your precious video.

Instead, provide an educational message that will tell a viewer how your video can help them. That is the key to blogging and Tweeting about your video. Lawyers who begin to understand this important concept will truly benefit from social media when trying to promote their attorney video.
